What’s On Her Hanger? Photographer, Model & Content Creator Alise Jane
Tall style, fabulous confidence, and what’s really in her closet ( and beauty bag too!)
Welcome to “What’s On Her Hanger?” A brand new interview series where we take a peek behind the wardrobe doors of some seriously stylish women. From fashion hacks to confidence boosters, we’re talking all things personal style! First up is a woman who wears many hats; photographer, model, and content creator all while standing tall at 5ft 10. Based in London, Elise Jane, has mastered the art of dressing for height and owning her unique silhouette.
Today we’re chatting tall-girl fashion tips, confidence on and off camera, and of course, the pieces she swears by.
Let’s dive into her hanger…
Describe your style in 3 words
chic, colourful, playful
What’s your go to “uniform” where you need to look smart but also you want to be comfortable too?
Now with Summer here, my go-to is a maxi dress, specifically a maxi shirt dress. It’s easy to throw on, I know I look elegant and put together and I feel so comfortable wearing it!
What’s your favorite styling trick for when you want to balance height and curves (especially with oversized or structured clothing)?
I love playing with the opposites - if I’m wearing baggy or wide-leg trousers, I’ll combine it with a fitted top (rarely the other way around haha). The same would go for mixing a maxi skirt and something more cropped at the top, this way I can showcase my waist without feeling like I'm drowning in too much fabric.
Are there any fashion myths that you completely disagree with?
How about all of them?! hahaha
I’ve tried to debunk most of the fashion myths and rules on my Instagram - following rules just takes away the fun element, which is what personal style should be - having fun with clothes!! Explain to me why curvy people can't wear horizontal stripes again? I just don't get it. Just wear what you love and wear it with CONFIDENCE! I truly believe that confidence is the main part of any outfit.
Where do you find your best “tall-friendly” wardrobe staples?
I’m yet to find one brand that consistently provides tall + curve friendly pieces that are also CHIC! I just go into stores and try everything on (if you don’t have the time, watch my try-on videos haha), that's the only way to truly see the fit on your body. We're all so different, I get why brands can't cater for every single body type, there would be even more stuff in landfills. So I don't mind popping into stores and trying a few pieces here and there.
That being said, I love when a brand has a tall section (like Asos, M&S to name a few), it's giving 'inclusivity'!
What brands do you like to shop that people might not think of straight away as being curve or tall friendly?
Mango, Reformation, Monsoon, JCrew all have extended sizing available and I'm eyeing a few pieces on their websites 👀
When it comes to sustainability in fashion : are you a pre- loved fashionista or rather you prefer to invest in high quality new pieces?
As much as I’d love to be a second hand girlie through and throughout, it’s not easy to find second-hand pieces that fit my aesthetic. So I’d say 70% of my wardrobe consists of newer purchases that are good quality and fit me well, then I find some filler pieces and accessories second hand.
I love how you embrace colour combinations; what’s your top tip for anyone who wants to include more vibrancy in their wardrobe
It’s been a journey!! I used to wear mainly back as I was told it’s more flattering and all I wanted was to hide my body as I lacked confidence. I was so afraid to venture out of my comfort zone! Now that I have gone through some rough patches in life, I love my body the way it is. I have so much more confidence and I embrace colour! It brings me so much joy!
The way I started the transition into colour was by simply incorporating one colour at a time - it could be a scarf, red lip and nails, or brighter shoes. The key is to trickle colour in slowly, don't overwhelm yourself. Then mix in more colour, then a little bit more... and with time you'll notice it won't feel like it's 'too much' at all, you'll get used to it.
Dream collab: If you could model for any brand tomorrow, who would it be?
Marina Rinaldi, Love And Lemons, Farm Rio - I mean fashion campaigns.
Can you share a recent outfit that made you feel unstoppable and tell us what about it worked so well for you?
I recently bought this burgundy red leather jacket while visiting my home town in Latvia, I’ve been after something like it for a while!! When I got back to London I realised I have a few other pieces in the same colour as the jacket, so I created a head-to-toe deep red outfit with all the items.
I wore it out and about and the reactions I got from people were amazing!! Speak of the power of colour!
The cherry on top was this sweet shop assistant in Loewe gifted me their signature tomato bag, the one you’d use to carry your new leather bag home. She just gave it to me and said it suits me so well I must have it! Such a funny and cute moment!
There's something about wearing bold colours that give me such a boost of energy - I feel like I can stand taller, speak to people and actually engage in conversations. I feel lifted!
Your favourite places to buy jeans or trousers that’s tall girl friendly?
Marina Rinaldi hands down does the best fitting EVERYTHING. It’s an investment, but it's amazing for curves!
I also love River Island, ASOS and Abercrombie for jeans and trousers. I always reach for those 👌
What are your non negotiables in your makeup bag or skincare routine?
I'm very simple when it comes to it, I have very sensitive skin and there’s certain brands that just work!
For skincare, hyaluronic acid by Gold Collagen; Madara SOS Hydra Cream + eye cream; at night Pai Rosehip Oil.
For makeup, Merit Complexion stick; Fenty Contour stick in Amber; ILIA Limitless Lash mascara
